The procedure can be performed immediately after mastectomy or delayed until a later time, and can be done in one or multiple stages. The type of reconstruction will depend on the individual’s anatomy, goals, and medical history. Free flap surgery are advanced reconstructive procedures often done for patients who have damage due to injury, trauma or breast cancer. The goal of DIEP (Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator) flap surgery is to recreate a natural-looking breast using skin, fat and blood vessels from a donor site, usually the abdomen, to rebuild the breast.

  • Hospitalisation: yes
  • Drains Required: Yes hours
  • Supporting Garment: Sports bra or custom-fitted garment and abdominal binder for 6 weeks post procedure

Follow-Up Details:

  • Next Follow-up: 1st week and 2nd week after discharge
  • Return to light work: 2 - 3 weeks after discharge
  • Return to moderately heavy physical work: 4 - 6 weeks after discharge
  • Return to heavy physical work (workout): 8 - 12 weeks after discharge
