OUR SERVICES

Reconstructive Surgery Procedures

Prof. Hindocha specialises in complex reconstructive surgery — restoring form, function and confidence after cancer treatment, trauma, and major surgery.

01 · BREAST RECONSTRUCTION

Restore What Cancer Has Taken

Prof. Hindocha offers a full range of post-mastectomy reconstruction — helping patients reclaim their confidence and sense of self. Each approach is tailored to your body, your health and your goals.

02 · DIEP & FREE FLAP

Natural Reconstruction Using Your Own Tissue

DIEP flap and other free flap techniques use your own body tissue to create a natural-feeling breast without implants. This advanced microsurgical approach delivers outstanding long-term results and avoids muscle damage.

03 · IMPLANT BASED

Reliable Results with Implant Reconstruction

Implant-based breast reconstruction is a well-established technique offering reliable results with shorter recovery than flap surgery. Used immediately after mastectomy or as a staged procedure, it provides excellent aesthetic outcomes.

04 · TRAUMA

Specialist Reconstruction After Trauma

Traumatic injuries can leave complex wounds and defects requiring specialist reconstructive surgery. Prof. Hindocha provides comprehensive trauma reconstruction — from wound coverage and soft tissue repair to functional restoration.

GMC SPECIALIST REGISTERED

RESTORING WHAT MATTERS

What Is Reconstructive Surgery?

Reconstructive surgery aims to restore normal appearance, form and function following illness, injury, cancer treatment or congenital conditions. Unlike cosmetic surgery, which enhances appearance electively, reconstructive surgery addresses significant physical or functional deficits that profoundly affect quality of life.

Prof. Hindocha holds dual expertise in both cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery — a combination that brings exceptional aesthetic sensibility to complex reconstructive cases, delivering outcomes that are not only functional but genuinely beautiful.

SPECIALIST RECONSTRUCTIVE CARE

Conditions & Indications for Reconstructive Surgery

Reconstructive surgery encompasses a broad spectrum of conditions. Prof. Hindocha works across private and NHS settings to provide expert surgical care for patients affected by the following:

Post-Mastectomy Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction following mastectomy for cancer — using implants, your own tissue, or a combination of both.

Burns Reconstruction

Complex reconstructive procedures for patients who have sustained significant burn injuries, restoring both function and appearance.

Cancer Reconstruction

Reconstruction following surgical excision of skin, head and neck, or soft tissue cancers — restoring form after cancer removal.

Congenital Conditions

Surgical correction of conditions present from birth, including hand anomalies, cleft-related deformity and other congenital differences.

Trauma Reconstruction

Reconstruction of complex traumatic injuries including degloving, crush injuries and significant soft tissue loss.

Revisional Reconstruction

Correction of previous surgical outcomes that have not achieved optimal function or appearance, requiring specialist revision.

A DEEPLY PERSONAL DECISION

Breast Reconstruction: Your Options Explained

Breast reconstruction after mastectomy is one of the most impactful procedures in reconstructive surgery. Prof. Hindocha works closely with oncologists and breast care nurses to guide you through your options at every stage of your journey.

Implant-Based Reconstruction

Tissue expanders and implants are used to recreate breast volume. Often performed in two stages, this is the most commonly performed technique in the UK.

Flap Reconstruction (DIEP / LD)

Your own tissue — typically from the abdomen (DIEP flap) or back (latissimus dorsi) — is used to reconstruct the breast, offering a natural, long-lasting result.

Timing: Immediate vs Delayed

Immediate reconstruction happens during your mastectomy, while delayed reconstruction takes place after cancer treatments. Prof. Hindocha will advise on the best timing.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Your Questions, Answered

We have answered the most common questions patients ask about reconstructive surgery, breast reconstruction and NHS pathways.
Cosmetic surgery is elective and aims to enhance appearance. Reconstructive surgery aims to restore normal form and function following illness, injury, cancer or congenital conditions — and is often medically necessary. Prof. Hindocha is trained in both disciplines, which means his reconstructive work is informed by a strong aesthetic sensibility.
Yes. Patients who require reconstruction following cancer treatment — including breast reconstruction after mastectomy — are entitled to NHS-funded reconstructive surgery. The Breast Cancer Now charity and your breast care nurse can advise on your rights. Prof. Hindocha also sees private patients, which may offer faster access and greater flexibility.
The duration depends on the technique chosen. Implant-based reconstruction (first stage) typically takes 1 to 2 hours. Autologous flap procedures such as DIEP or LD flap are more complex operations and may take 4 to 8 hours. Prof. Hindocha will explain the expected operative time during your pre-operative assessment.
Recovery varies considerably depending on the procedure. Following implant-based reconstruction, most patients are discharged within 2 to 3 days and can return to light activities within 4 to 6 weeks. Flap reconstruction requires a longer hospital stay — typically 4 to 7 days — and a recovery period of 6 to 12 weeks. Dedicated aftercare and follow-up appointments are provided throughout.
Yes. Immediate reconstruction — performed at the same time as mastectomy — is often preferable as it reduces the number of operations and means the patient wakes from surgery with a reconstructed breast mound already in place. However, delayed reconstruction is sometimes more appropriate depending on oncological factors. Prof. Hindocha will work with your oncology team to determine the best timing for your case.
If you are having cancer treatment, your oncologist or breast care nurse can refer you to a plastic surgeon for reconstruction. For other reconstructive needs, your GP can provide a referral. Alternatively, you can self-refer for a private consultation with Prof. Hindocha directly — no GP referral is required for a private appointment.
