COMPREHENSIVE SKIN CARE

Skin Conditions Requiring Surgical Treatment

Prof. Hindocha treats a wide range of skin lesions and conditions, from suspicious moles and skin cancers to benign cysts and growths. Early diagnosis and prompt surgical removal can be life-saving.

Basal Cell Carcinoma

The most common form of skin cancer — highly treatable with early surgical excision and clear margins.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma

A UV-related skin cancer that requires prompt surgical removal and histological confirmation of clear margins.

Melanoma

The most serious form of skin cancer, requiring wide local excision and specialist MDT involvement for optimal outcomes.

Moles & Pigmented Lesions

Suspicious or changing moles are assessed using dermoscopy and removed with histological analysis.

Cysts & Lipomas

Epidermal, pilar and sebaceous cysts — along with lipomas — removed cleanly under local anaesthetic.

Keloids & Hypertrophic Scars

Problematic scarring treated with excision and adjuvant therapy to minimise recurrence and improve appearance.

ACT EARLY, ACT SAFELY

When Should You See a Skin Surgeon?

Most skin conditions are highly treatable when caught early. You should seek a surgical opinion promptly if you notice any of the following changes to a mole or skin lesion:

  • Asymmetry — one half does not match the other
  • Border irregularity — uneven, ragged or blurred edges
  • Colour variation — multiple shades of brown, black, red or white
  • Diameter — larger than 6mm or growing rapidly
  • Evolution — any change in size, shape, colour or new bleeding
SIMPLE, SAFE & EFFECTIVE

What to Expect During Your Skin Surgery Procedure

Most skin surgery procedures are performed as day-case procedures under local anaesthetic and take between 20 and 60 minutes. Here is what typically happens:

01

Assessment & Marking

The area is examined, the lesion measured and the excision margins marked precisely before any incision.

02

Local Anaesthetic

A small injection of local anaesthetic numbs the area completely. Most patients feel only minimal discomfort.

03

Excision & Closure

The lesion is removed with appropriate margins. The wound is closed with fine sutures to minimise scarring.

04

Histology Report

All removed tissue is sent to a pathology laboratory. Results are typically available within 2 weeks.

AFTER YOUR PROCEDURE

Recovery & Wound Care After Skin Surgery

Most patients recover quickly after skin surgery. Following Prof. Hindocha’s post-operative instructions carefully will give you the best possible scar outcome.

The First 48 Hours

Keep the wound dry and covered. Avoid strenuous activity and direct sun exposure. Mild discomfort is normal and manageable with over-the-counter pain relief.

Suture Removal

Non-dissolvable sutures are typically removed 5 to 14 days after surgery, depending on the location. Facial sutures are removed earliest to minimise track marks.

Scar Management

Once healed, applying silicone gel and SPF 50 sunscreen daily significantly improves scar appearance. Scars continue to mature and fade for up to 18 months.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Your Questions, Answered

We have answered the most common questions patients ask about skin surgery, mole removal and skin lesion treatment.
You should seek a surgical opinion promptly if a mole or lesion is changing in size, shape or colour; has irregular or blurred edges; bleeds or itches spontaneously; or is simply causing you concern. Early assessment is always preferable — most skin cancers are curable when caught at an early stage.
The majority of skin surgery procedures are performed comfortably under local anaesthetic as a day-case procedure, meaning you can go home the same day. General anaesthetic is occasionally used for larger, more complex excisions or for patients who prefer to be completely unaware during the procedure.
Most skin lesion removal procedures take between 20 and 60 minutes from start to finish. You should allow approximately two hours in total for your appointment, including preparation, the procedure itself and recovery time before discharge.
All surgical incisions leave some degree of scarring. Prof. Hindocha uses fine suture techniques and closes wounds meticulously to minimise scarring. The final appearance of a scar depends on the location and size of the excision, your skin type and how well you follow post-operative care advice — including scar gel application and UV protection.
Surgical excision is the most reliable treatment for the majority of skin cancers, including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. Some superficial BCCs may be treated with topical therapies or photodynamic therapy, but surgery with histologically confirmed clear margins remains the gold standard for most cases.
Prof. Hindocha understands that waiting is anxiety-inducing when you are concerned about a skin lesion. Private appointments are typically available within days. If you are referred urgently by your GP under the two-week wait pathway, NHS appointments are also available. Please contact us and we will ensure you are seen as quickly as possible.
