MOVE FORWARD. LEAVE IT BEHIND.
Surgical and laser options to permanently remove unwanted tattoos — tailored to your tattoo’s size, location, ink colour, and what your skin needs to heal well.
ABOUT THIS PROCEDURE
Tattoos are permanent by design — but that doesn’t mean they have to stay. People seek tattoo removal for all kinds of reasons: a design that no longer reflects who they are, a professional situation that has changed, a skin reaction to the original ink, or scarring left behind by a previous removal attempt. Whatever the reason, there is no judgement here — only a practical assessment of what can be done and how best to do it.
There are two primary approaches to tattoo removal: laser treatment and surgical excision. Laser uses targeted light energy to break down the tattoo ink into small particles that the body’s immune system gradually clears away. Surgical excision removes the tattooed skin directly by cutting it out and carefully closing the wound — producing a definitive result in a single procedure at the cost of a scar.
The best approach depends on the size, location, ink colours, age and depth of the tattoo, as well as your skin type and personal priorities. In some cases, a combination of both techniques achieves the best outcome. A consultation with Prof. Hindocha will give you a clear, honest assessment of what is possible for your specific tattoo.
UNDERSTANDING YOUR OPTIONS
Choose surgical excision if your tattoo is small enough to excise cleanly, you want a permanent result in a single procedure, or you have a skin reaction to the ink that needs to be physically removed. The trade-off is a fine scar — but for many patients, a small, fading scar is far preferable to a tattoo they no longer want.
Choose laser removal if your tattoo is too large or in a location where surgical excision would leave an unacceptable scar, you want to avoid any new scar, or you need to fade a tattoo before excision of a smaller residual area. Laser requires patience — it is a course of treatment, not a single appointment.
Quick Comparison
Surgical Excision
Single procedure • Definitive • Leaves a fine scar • Best for small tattoos
Laser Removal
Multiple sessions • No new scar • Best for large or multi-colour tattoos
Combined Approach
Laser to fade, then excision of residual area • Best of both in selected cases

First Follow-up
The exact surgical approach — augmentation, reduction, lift or combination — is determined at consultation based on your individual anatomy and goals.
RECOVERY TIMELINE
Days 1–3
You go home the same day. The treated area will be dressed and some tenderness and redness is expected. Dressings are changed at 24 hours. Most patients return to light work and gentle daily activity within 2–3 days of the procedure.
Week 1
Your first follow-up is one week after the procedure. The wound is assessed, healing is confirmed, and any sutures or dressings are reviewed. Aftercare guidance is updated based on how your skin is responding.
Weeks 2–4
The treated area continues to heal and any redness or swelling progressively reduces. Full physical activity can typically resume within 3–4 weeks. Sun protection over the healing skin is strongly advised during this period.
Months 3–12
The scar or treated area continues to mature and fade over several months. For laser treatment, multiple sessions spaced weeks apart are required until the ink has fully cleared. The final result improves progressively throughout this period.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Results vary by technique and tattoo characteristics, but most patients experience meaningful and lasting improvement:
WHY CHOOSE SURGICAL OR LASER REMOVAL
Surgical excision removes the tattooed skin definitively in a single visit — no waiting months between laser sessions, no partial fading. The tattoo is gone, and the wound is carefully closed to heal as neatly as possible.
Laser treatment reaches ink at any depth without surgery, making it the preferred approach for large tattoos or those in areas where excision would leave an unacceptable scar. Different wavelengths target different ink colours.
Whether surgical or laser, tattoo removal is performed as a day case under local anaesthetic or IV sedation. No overnight stay, no general anaesthetic in most cases, and a straightforward recovery from the day of the procedure.
Post-procedure scar management — including wound care, silicone therapy, and follow-up review — is part of the plan from the outset, giving the treated skin the best possible conditions to heal well.
WHAT WE CONSIDER
Every tattoo is different. These are the key factors that shape which approach will work best.
SIZE & LOCATION
Smaller tattoos are ideal candidates for surgical excision. Larger tattoos are typically better suited to laser. Location also matters — tattoos on areas with loose or elastic skin close better after excision, while those over joints or in cosmetically sensitive areas need careful planning to avoid functional or aesthetic compromise.
INK COLOUR & DEPTH
Black and dark blue inks respond most readily to laser removal. Lighter and brighter colours — particularly yellow, green and white — are more resistant and may require more sessions or a different laser wavelength. Ink deposited deeply in the dermis takes longer to clear than more superficial tattooing. Surgical excision removes all ink regardless of colour or depth.
AGE & SKIN CONDITION
Older tattoos often fade more readily with laser as the ink has already begun to break down over time. Skin type affects how safely laser energy can be delivered — higher melanin levels require more cautious settings to avoid pigmentation changes. Existing scarring from previous removal attempts is also assessed, as it affects both the technique and the likely outcome.
“
I had a large tattoo on my forearm that I had regretted for years. The surgical removal left a scar I can barely see now. Best decision I ever made.
“
I had scarring from a botched laser attempt elsewhere. Prof. Hindocha sorted it out properly. The result is so much better than I thought was possible at that point.
“
No judgement, just practical advice and excellent results. The consultation was honest about what could be done, and the treatment delivered exactly what was promised.
SETTING EXPECTATIONS
After surgical excision, a fine linear scar replaces the tattoo. This scar will be red and slightly raised initially, but it matures progressively over 12–18 months — fading, softening and flattening until it sits close to the natural skin tone. Scar management from day one gives the best long-term outcome.
After laser removal, the treated skin may appear frosted or raised immediately after each session — this settles within hours to days. Between sessions, the ink visibly fades. Temporary pigmentation changes can occur, particularly in darker skin types, but these usually resolve. Sun protection is essential throughout the course of treatment.
