Recovery after breast reduction is usually smoother than many patients expect, and the relief from neck, back and shoulder strain is often felt quickly. Knowing what each stage looks like helps you plan time off and support at home.
The first week
You will wear a supportive surgical bra and can expect swelling, bruising and tightness across the chest. Discomfort is generally well controlled with prescribed pain relief. Most patients rest, keep mobile around the house to reduce clot risk, and avoid lifting.
Weeks two to three
Bruising fades and many people return to desk-based work. You should still avoid strenuous activity, heavy lifting and overhead movements. Scars are healing but remain firm and pink at this stage.
Weeks four to six
Light exercise is often reintroduced with your surgeon’s agreement. Swelling continues to settle and the breasts begin to look more like their final shape. Supportive bras remain important.
Three months and beyond
Most normal activity, including more vigorous exercise, has resumed. Scars continue to mature and soften over many months. Final shape and scar appearance settle over roughly a year. Good scar care and not smoking support healing.

Frequently asked questions
How long does breast reduction recovery take?
Many patients return to desk work within two to three weeks and to most normal activity by six weeks, with swelling and scars continuing to settle over several months. Recovery varies by individual and by the extent of surgery.
When can I exercise after breast reduction?
Light activity is often reintroduced around four to six weeks, and more vigorous exercise later, always guided by your surgeon. Returning too soon can affect healing and comfort.
Will the scars fade?
Breast reduction scars are permanent but typically fade and soften over the first year. Good scar care, sun protection and not smoking help them mature well.
When will I see my final shape?
Breasts begin to look more natural from around six weeks, with the final shape settling over several months as swelling fully resolves.
