Breast Reduction

A cosmetic surgical technique that involves the removal of extra breast tissue and skin to enhance their look and relieve problems due to heavy breasts.

ABOUT THIS SERVICE

What is Breast Reduction Surgery?

A breast reduction (or reduction mammoplasty) is a surgery performed to reduce breast size and reshape them. Typically, candidates for this treatment may have breasts that are noticeably different in size (asymmetric).

Many women with big, heavy breasts experience a combination of the following symptoms: back, shoulder or breast pain; a rash beneath the breasts due to sweat during summer; trouble exercising; and difficulty in properly supporting the breasts.

Having large breasts is typically accompanied by pain, discomfort, and embarrassment, all of which can be successfully addressed with breast reduction surgery.

RECOVERY TIMELINE

Your Path to Recovery

Week 1

Initial Recovery

Rest and avoid strenuous activity. Your first follow-up appointment takes place this week to monitor healing and manage discomfort.

Week 2

Follow-Up Review

Second check-up appointment. Swelling and bruising begin to settle. Light work can typically be resumed.

Weeks 2–4

Gradual Return

Moderately heavy physical activities may be reintroduced as healing progresses. Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous exertion.

Week 6

Full Activity

Return to full exercise and heavy physical work. Continue wearing your sports bra until cleared by Prof. Hindocha.

SCARRING & HEALING TIMELINE

What Happens to Your Scars

Weeks 1–2

Initial Incision

Incisions appear red and slightly raised. Wounds are dressed and monitored at your follow-up appointment. Avoid all sun exposure to the area during this period.

Weeks 3–6

Settling & Softening

Redness begins to fade and scars start to flatten. Silicone gel or sheets may be recommended to support scar maturation from this stage.

Months 2–6

Progressive Fading

Scars continue to lighten and soften considerably. Consistent sun protection and use of scar treatment products are important throughout this phase.

12–18 Months

Mature Scar

Most patients see scars fade to thin, pale lines easily concealed by clothing. Final appearance varies by skin type and adherence to aftercare guidance.

  • Breasts became significantly larger or heavier after pregnancy or nursing

  • You have completed your family and are not planning further pregnancies
