Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty): Candidacy, Procedure and Recovery

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) refreshes tired-looking eyes by removing or repositioning excess skin and fat on the upper or lower lids. It is one of the most popular facial procedures because small changes around the eyes make a noticeable difference.

Who is a candidate?

Good candidates have hooded or heavy upper lids, under-eye bags, or excess lid skin that may even affect the field of vision. General good health and realistic expectations are important. The procedure rejuvenates the eyes without changing their fundamental shape.

The procedure

Upper blepharoplasty removes a precise strip of excess skin through a hidden crease incision. Lower blepharoplasty addresses bags and is often performed through an incision just below the lashes or inside the lid. It may be done under local or general anaesthetic depending on the case.

Recovery

Expect bruising and swelling for one to two weeks. Most people return to work and social life within ten to fourteen days. Scars sit in natural creases and fade well. Cool compresses, head elevation and sun protection help.

Results

Eyelid surgery gives long-lasting rejuvenation, although the eyes continue to age naturally. For some patients, combining it with non-surgical treatments or a brow lift gives the most balanced result. See our face and neck page or arrange a consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Is eyelid surgery painful?

Discomfort is usually mild and well controlled with simple pain relief. Bruising and swelling are more noticeable than pain and settle over one to two weeks.

How long do the results of blepharoplasty last?

Upper eyelid surgery in particular gives long-lasting results. The eyes continue to age naturally, but most patients enjoy the rejuvenation for many years.

Will eyelid surgery leave visible scars?

Incisions are placed in the natural eyelid crease or just below the lashes, so scars are well hidden and typically fade to be very inconspicuous.

Can eyelid surgery improve my vision?

When heavy upper-lid skin obstructs the field of vision, removing it can improve the visual field as well as appearance. Your surgeon will assess this at consultation.
